The solar park, wood pellet plants and furnaces, forest management and community heating districts in Germany and Austria are a long way from something this region will likely see in the next few years, but a small delegation of South Dakotans who went on a study tour there see potential down the road.
State Sen. Jason Frerichs, D-Wilmot, East River Electric Power Cooperative general manager Jeff Nelson and South Dakota Farmers Union communications director Chris Studer traveled to Europe this past summer to see how renewable energy is working there and share experiences about what is developing here.
"I think what I was most struck by was the very clear focus in Germany and Austria to what appears to be a very clear commitment on the federal, state and local level to embrace and develop renewables," said Nelson, the 21-year manager at East River.
"We saw a clear connection of using the development of renewable resources to achieve both energy security and independence, but at the same time to drive local job creation and economic benefits," Nelson said.
