Carl Zimmer, noted U.S. science writer and author, has written a new book called Science Ink: Tattoos of the Science Obsessed .

It presents more than 300 images of scientists — or science lovers — revealing their science tattoos, which include everything from coelacanths to the Continuity Equation.

We caught up with Zimmer to hear how he became a curator of scientists’ science tattoos.

Q. For people who don’t know you, do you have a tattoo?

A. I do not have a tattoo. I have an aversion to needles and even working on this project hasn’t made me overcome it.

Q. You are well-known for writing serious pieces about serious science. How did you end up writing about scientists and their science-related tattoos?

A. One day, I noticed a neuroscientist at Harvard who I knew had a DNA tattoo on his shoulder. I complimented him on it. He explained to me that he had encoded his wife’s initials in that particular piece of DNA. So I thought: ‘Ah, I see, this is what a scientist does when he gets a tattoo.
