Crestview students embracing career options
NEW WATERFORD - Statistics may show U.S. students shying away from science, technology, engineering and math careers, but at Crestview Local Schools students are embracing those options for their future.
This school year, Crestview implemented a new program through Project Lead the Way, encouraging students to look at opportunities in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM).
Students are not just reading about science, working math equations or using the computers to cruise the Internet, they are utilizing what they know to solve problems, design their own models and create their projects to see if they work.
Taught by Celia Lewis, who has both an education and an engineering degree, along with a background in tool and dye making, the program combines her knowledge with her new passion of teaching.
"STEM is such a growing field," Lewis said. "A lot of jobs are STEM related."
She has students researching careers in the engineering field, learning about what education is needed, what the job entails and how much someone in the field can expect to earn.
