WHAT would happen if all of the farmers disappeared?
Statistics indicate this dying breed is on in decline, leading to fears that farmers will soon be an endangered species.
One Hindu newspaper reported that more than 44,000 farmers have committed suicide in Maharashtra state since 1997, a trend tragically observed in the cotton growing belt of Vidarbha.
The main cause of their woes, according to activists, was the cultivation of a genetically modified variety of cotton which - after an initial bumper harvest - seemed to give faltering yields in subsequent years.
Couple this with high interest rates on loans and high prices of pesticides and seeds, they have a very slim profit margin.
As most companies involved in the textile industry buy cotton cheap and later sell it for exorbitant prices, farmers are essentially being robbed.
What's interesting is the fact that this cotton growing region is in the same state as India's financial capital Mumbai.
