Centers let Boone students get creative
CHARLESTON, W.Va. - Students from three Boone County schools are getting an enriched education with the help of the Clay Center.
Van Junior/Senior High, Madison Middle and Sherman Junior High now are sites of 21st Century Learning Centers.
The centers opened Nov. 7 and provide students with tutoring and opportunities to study topics not covered during the regular school day.
Students also get to visit the Clay Center, with admission, transportation and food provided.
Tuesday was the first day for the Boone students to roam the Clay Center's art gallery and science exhibits, as well as view the night sky and a movie in the Electric Sky domed theater.
"It's very important because many of these students have never been here before and many usually don't have the opportunity to explore galleries or see large-screen films," said Staci Leech-Cornell, community learning center manager.
In the Gizmo Factory, students blew huge bubbles through a soap screen, dug through gigantic boxes of Legos and used a pulley system to lift themselves.
