SOIL health is the heart and soul of every farming operation, and for Central Queensland beef producer Ray Vella it's critical to increasing production and ultimately kilograms over the hook.

Mr Vella and his wife Leah run Bald Hills, north of Marlborough, a family property comprising 7284 hectares of coastal country bordered by the mouth of the Styx River and Herbert Creek, and typified by high rainfall, humidity and a mix of soil types that run right to the salt pans.

They run 3000 EU-accredited crossbred cattle in a breeding and finishing operation and have also established their own Brahman stud.

"When I look at our cattle, I see them as a plough, slasher and fertiliser - they're part of a farming operation and play a huge role in contributing to the health of the soils," Mr Vella said.
