When it comes to reading, the most important lesson a parent can pass on to a child is simply that it is fun. That was the idea at Cascades Elementary School’s first “Little Read” literacy program.
Throughout the school year, the school will be hosting reading events for each grade level, where parents and child get a chance to read together. The program, which is made possible through a grant from Target, includes free books and word games.
“When it comes to learning one of the most important factors is how parents treat academics,” said Jennie O’Brien Tocco, Cascades Parent Teacher Association president. “And for reading, reading at home is key. It has a huge effect on academic life, and the important thing for parents isn’t to focus on ‘decoding’ words but to make the experience powerful and interesting for their child.”
The first event was for first-graders and their parents. It featured a “Magic Tree House” book called “Thanksgiving on Thursday” and a nonfiction book called “Pilgrims.
