An Orange County teen is currently serving a 40-year prison sentence after being convicted in November of the attempted capital murder of his grandmother.
Evidence presented in court showed 18-year-old Horace Dempsey severely beat his 51-year-old grandmother, Sylvia Vaughns , and left her unclothed and badly beaten body in her home on Mill Street on April 5. After he beat her with a hammer, Dempsey took Vaughns' debit card, her car and other items from her house.
She is now paralyzed and blind. She lost an eye, two fingers and all of her teeth in the attack and suffered a shattered jaw and shattered skull. She also is battling cancer.
Dempsey was portrayed as being ultimately interested in control of Vaughns' home and vehicle. Prosecutors suggested Dempsey thought she was not dying fast enough from cancer, so he took matters into his own hands.
