American market giant wants a slice of the action
A SLICE of America has landed on Glasgow’s South Side as the first branch of US supermarket Whole Foods Market prepares to open.
The Evening Times got the first look around the celeb-favourite shop, which has created jobs for 150 people and sells grocery staples as well as fancy foods.
The former Morrison’s store in Fenwick Road, Giffnock, which had been empty for years, has had a £5.3 million makeover.
The firm sells mostly natural and organic products with a focus on fresh and local goods.
A total of 400 Scottish brands will fill the shelves including some from the local area including coffee from Thomsons of Giffnock, ice cream from Thorntonhall, and bread from Newlands Home Bakery.
About 20 staff from the chain’s US stores have been flown into Glasgow to help set up the new shop, the first in the UK outside London, where there are four branches. There are 300 branches across the US.
